Good Morning, Vietnam(1987) Genre: Comedy/Drama/War, runtime: 117 minutes, 4/5

Robin Williams is absolutely manic and lovable in his turn here as the irreverent disc jockey who lands in Saigon in the late 60s. He does not want to toe the official line, that the radio be a somber voice of the US, but goes all out with his mimicries and obscenities. Forest Whitaker is barely recognizable in his much leaner avatar in what is one of his better early roles.

This is among Williams' best performances, right up there with  his Academy Award winning turn in "Good Will Hunting", "Awakenings"," Dead poet's society" etc.

The best scenes are when Williams is on the radio. He was given no script so as to give him a carte blanche. He had to ad lib and does a fantastic job. The dialogues are hilarious and the one liners will make Woody Allen proud.

This terrific entertainer was directed by Barry Levinson who was in the purple patch of his career, what with the Oscar winning "rain man" to follow the next year.

It was a blockbuster when it was released earning close to $130 million dollars.
