The man without a past(2002), Genre: Drama/Comedy, Runtime: 88 minutes, 3.5/5

How often one wishes his past was erased so that he is unencumbered of its burden, free to build a different, a better legacy. But what if such a thing happens unexpectedly? How would anyone react?

A person gets down from the train. He is obviously new to the place as he goes to sleep in a park. There, he is brutally assaulted and left for dead by three men. His luggage is stolen. His wallet is thrown away.

The man somehow ends up in a hospital. However, when he wakes up, he doesn’t remember his name. There are a few vestiges of his previous life but for the most part, he has become a man without the past.

He slowly starts earning friends. There is a family man who gives him refuge and makes the man from the train his drinking buddy. He gets him a room to live in. The landlord has the funniest role in the movie with amazing lines delivered dead pan.

The man falls in love with a Salvation Army representative and slowly but surely begins getting in the groove.  He gets implicated in a crime.

Will his past come back to claim its due?

The director Aki Kaurismaki handles the situations masterfully and with a great sense of humor. The acting is as natural as it gets. The characters are relatable and someone the viewer begins to care for as the movie progresses.

This is a beautiful experience which should not be missed by lovers of good cinema or by people with any sense of humor.
