Raavi paar and other stories(1997) by Gulzar, Genre: Drama(Short stories), Rating: 5/5

This collection of short stories by the inimitable Gulzar was published back in 1997. This has entered its fourth reprint since 2006 when Rupa got the publishing rights. But they haven't bothered to update the author's introduction to include his Oscar and other recent wins. It still lists the National Award for Maachis(1997) as his most recent Big Moment. This is my only grouse with this superb compendium of short tales.

Here, the average length of the stories is 6-8 pages and every one has a sting in the tail. Just when the reader thinks he knows the direction where the story is heading, Gulzar pulls the rug from under the unsuspecting dude's feet.

There are many heart wrenching stories about the partition of India and the plight of women. There is a winning tale told from the view point of animals who decide to take on humans who they suspect are planning to invade their forests.

This is a must have for the fans of Gulzar as well as those readers who like their serving small yet stunning.
