The Last Stand is a 2013 action/crime thriller which was
touted as the comeback vehicle of Schwarzenegger. Directed by the Korean Kim
Jee Woon, acclaimed master of thrillers with past masterpieces like I saw the
Devil, The tale of two sisters and A Bitter Sweet Life to his credit, this was
expected to maul the competition at the box office. However, as the saying goes
“Man plans, God laughs”, it bombed.
Hence, I approached this with a sense of trepidation, my time being
costly and all. However, I ended up enjoying it the most out of the three
movies I saw this weekend.
There is a small town called Summerton bordering US which
has the aging hulk Arnold as the sheriff. He has a police force of three bumbling
persons, one lady and two men. They don’t know it yet, but their town has been
chosen by the mafia henchmen as the designated passing point into Mexico for
their cruel boss who has escaped from FBI’s custody and is moving towards the
border in a stolen Corvette ZR1 which is a very fast car.
The acting takes a backseat, on expected lines. The focus of
the director is on keeping his foot on the pedal and turn this into a pure
adrenaline rush. He mostly succeeds due to the well-executed chase and action
scenes. There are lots of flying body parts, one liners and bullets flying to
keep even the most jaded action fan interested and glued to the screen. Most of
the time.
The viewer is never bored and hence pardons the director and
the scriptwriter even though they serve something which is clichéd to the hilt.
This is a well-made action movie and didn’t deserve such a cruel fate at the
box office.
